"Time Flies whether you're wasting it or not"

I have come to learn that I find it almost impossible NOT to convert just about everything!
After I finished colouring the edges of the SH board, I couldn't help but notice just how plain and boring (IMHO) the game's timer looks! Naturally I need to convert it! I looked on-line for some inspiration and found the image of timer with a big skull inside each half which was really cool. But I don't have skulls of that scale available to me, so... I decided to use GW's skulls and make two piles of skulls to place inside the existing timer, one human pile, and one Genestealer. I have assembled the skull piles on diamond hex plasticard.

Next I will cut the ends off of the timer so that I can fit these bad boys in there after I have painted them. I am also thinking about making a "case" for the timer that is themed after the Genestealer bases. It will have "hulk style" floor tiles as a base on each end...Possibly filled with skulls like the Terminator Librarian's base, and some form of supporting bars similar to what the Genestealers are modelled on. I will post more pics as the project progresses.

I am always open to feedback and suggestions too!

So I have cut the ends off of the timer and have predictably encountered my first challenge. When cutting the ends off, little pieces of plastic shavings have fallen into the sand and they block the sands flow through the timer! So I have had to empty the sand and go through it by hand to fish out the almost invisible culprits of the blockage.

As I thought, my plans for the timer's base have had to change due to the ideas not translating well into reality. I do have a new plan/vision that seems to be working out quite well so far though. So I am still optimistic/hopeful.

I got a lot of work done on half of the timer's base tonight. Simpler look that I had in mind, but I like it. I have used the base of a quad gun emplacement as the base, and cut an inner ring from plasticard to fill the gap between the timer and the edge. Then I added in some "rivets" to make it look more "space Hulky".
I will be using green stuff to fill in the gaps on the bottom here to add stability and a tight seal to the timer.
I kept it simple and just cut another piece of plasticard for the base to tidy it all up on the bottom.
This also gives me a nice flat surface to attach the skull pile to and to make a nice seal to make sure that I don't loose any of the timer's sand. I think my best bet is to paint all of the components before to glue anything together.

Next up is the other end. I think this one will be harder to do because it is going to be 100% scratch built. I'm off to good start though!

I made some significant progress on the scratch built half of the timer tonight. I tried to make it different enough that it is not a carbon copy of the other end, but similar enough that there is congruency. Adding rivets is next.

Adding rivets is next.
After doing a dry fit, I have decided that I will model a back panel for support/integrity.
I am envisioning the back panel having a computer console, a fan, and some wires, cables, etc...
The last thing I want is for an end of the timer to pop off and loose all of the sand.
This means that I will need to paint everything prior to assembling it.
There is still A LOT of work to do, but I feel like I am making progress.
